Before the exam period and school holidays, students in Daund district (Pune) came together for an exciting day of 8-a-side hockey. Almost 200 kids from eight schools, divided into 16 teams, made for two vibrant and energetic tournament days.
Celebration and competition
The schools were divided over two days. As to good Indian custom, the days began with a small ceremony by the host schools. Each day over 90 students from grade 6 and 7 – divided over 4 girls and 4 boys teams – represented their schools. Many of these players have been playing hockey for two years or less, since the program launched in Yavat and later kicked-off around Kurkumbh as well.
The tournament format allowed every team plenty of opportunities to play. During the first round the teams competed in matches between all schools. In the second round matches were held to determine 3rd place and the tournament champions.

Skills and sportsmanship
Months of training sessions and friendly matches translated into strong performances. The progress made by the players was evident throughout the event, with students demonstrating improved passing, ball control and teamwork. The competition also served as a learning opportunity itself. Between games, coaches provided feedback and guidance that players put into practice during their next matches.
Just as important these days was the positive spirit in which the matches were played. Players showed great sportsmanship, shaking hands before and after games, and encouraging other teams and teammates. Teachers were delighted to watch the students compete, and several parents came to support and cheer on the young athletes.

Celebrating every player
The tournament concluded with a festive prize distribution. All players received a certificate for their participation. On top of that, a range of individual prizes were awarded; for Stick skills and Speedster, but also Positive energy, Hardest worker, and Never giving up. By recognising a variety of strengths that contribute to a successful team, we ensure that every player can have the opportunity to be celebrated for their efforts.
All teams took a trophy back, the biggest for the winners. Congratulations to:
- Girls: Vidya Vikas Mandir School (day 1), and Pandrewadi ZP School (day 2).
- Boys: Dhaigudewadi ZP School 1 (day 1) and Pandrewadi ZP School (day 2).

Next year
Thanks to the host schools, Vidya Vikas Mandir School and Firangai Mata School, helping to make the tournament days a success. A special thank you goes to all coaches for their work in preparing and supporting the players. Thanks also to PSEPL, with whom we launched the program in Daund district. We’re proud to see the enthusiasm and skill development continue.
On the next school day, we heard many of the teams were felicitated in their school assemblies. The local paper covered Pandrewadi’s wins. Great testimony to the power of sport, teamwork and personal growth. Exciting to see our hockey program create lasting memories for young players.
This school year showed again how sport brings communities together, builds confidence and encourages learning. We look forward to keep working with these schools and seeing the students’ hockey journey continue in the next school year!
